Safety

Safety is a high priority for every parent as it is for our staff. Yet to imply that camp is safe is to suggest that injury is not possible and will not happen. No one and no place can make such a claim. To be alive is to be at risk. Taking risks is necessary for life and for growth. Camping is no different.

A canoe trip, for example, has inherent risks. We address those by choosing relative low risk routes, requiring life jacket use at all times, tolerating no horseplay in the boats, having a Lifeguard and a First Aid trained staff member present. Similar safety standards are in place for our activities both on and off site. Equipment, buildings, vehicles, waterfront setting and boats, food handling and storage procedures and even our trees are routinely inspected for safety concerns.

All staff, paid and volunteer, are carefully screened as required by law, our policy and American Camp Association standards. At least three written references are required. Verbal verification is conducted. Work histories are verified. Annually criminal checks are conducted on all new and all returning staff members. All staff who supervise campers are required by Detroit Conference policy to complete our Protection Training class which addresses proper touch, appropriate verbal skills, staying within sight and sound, and keeping campers in groups of 3 so that no one is ever alone with anyone.

Our Health Officer should be informed of any health concern and will take reasonable steps to ensure that each camper is properly cared for. Our cook will take reasonable steps to deal with food allergies.
