Camp Kinawind operates with a small paid staff and a
large number of volunteers. Adults wishing to donate time and energy might
consider volunteering for one or more of the following roles:
Work Camp:
Prior to the opening of camp
each year, a group of adults gather for a week of work. Currently led by
Mike Seymour, the work camp welcomes new members. Participants range from
college-aged to 80something. Tasks range from general cleaning, mowing, painting, and
clearing trails of downfall to roofing, building repair,
plumbing/electrical, and chain sawing. There is work for all skill levels
and physical ability levels. Participants are welcome for the entire time
or a just a day or two.
Work campers stay in their own RVs or in camp cabins. Participants
provide their own breakfast and lunch but chip in money for a communally
prepared and eaten dinner every evening. There is no registration fee. May
27-June 3, 2009. Participate for all or part of the time. If you plan on
attending, please RSVP to Fred at
kinawind@umccamps.org.
Health Officer:
Although state law allows
persons with a wide variety of certifications to serve as the mandatory
Health Officer, our policy is to use only Doctors or Registered Nurses.
Health officers volunteer for a one-week term. A background check will be
performed.
Program Dean:
Each event has a dean in
charge of recruiting, training, and supervising the event’s counselors. Some deans also serve as counselors especially in events with low numbers,
e.g. Voyager trips, CIT training and the like. Training is provided and
required and a
background check will be performed.
Counselors:
Kinawind depends heavily on a group of committed adults to provide this
unique ministry opportunity for youth. Counselors live in the cabin with
campers and spend all of their waking hours with the group. It is a
very demanding roles and a very rewarding role. Experience working with youth
in the outdoors is helpful. A caring Christian attitude is essential.
Training is provided and required and a background check will be performed.
